NPCs on Buried Light are in every way identical to a Character. They have Ranks, Foci, Equipment, and all the rest of the technical aspects of a Character; their progression is exactly the same, their character sheets are exactly the same as a regular character's.
There's only one key difference between NPCs and Characters: they cannot gain Orbs from threads directly. Some NPCs allied to your Characters, dubbed "Squadmates", can gain Orbs through the Squads system (see below).
To recruit an NPC, you need to post their application in the Hire a Squadmate section of the Velvet Underground. This application is in all respects identical to a Character App, so you can use the same templates you'd normally use.
Squadmate NPCs begin at Rank D with 1000 Red Orbs just like Characters.
A Squad is a group of characters and NPCs that team up under the same name. There's no clearly defined structure to a Squad, and generally it will depend on the specific Faction its members belong to.
"Squad" is a catch-all name. Every Faction deals with Squads slightly differently, and you have a lot of freedom in choosing what exactly your Squad is and where it fits in the bigger scheme of Faction hierarchies. NPCs that belong to some squad are called "Squadmates".
Squads have their own pool of Red Orbs that they can spend on whatever they wish. Most importantly, you can choose to spend these Red Orbs on any Squadmate; this is the only way for a Squadmate to gain any Red Orbs.
The major advantage of being in a Squad is that as you play and your characters accumulate Red Orbs, the Squad does too.
There's a big incentive to play with other people, bring friends over, or make new friends, as the more people are in your Squad the faster it can grow.
To understand all the details of how Orb rewards work for Squads and Characters, check out the Progression rules.
In order for a Squad to be approved and official, it needs to have 1 character. The rest can be other characters or Squadmates. To create a squad, you need to fill in the following template and post it in the Squad Approvals section.
You're free to customise your Squad App further, but it must contain at least the same information as this template if not more.
Assets are some additional things Squads can spend their Red Orbs on to increase their manpower and influence. As a baseline, a Squad doesn't have anything to its name; characters are assumed to have their own houses, apartments, or living quarters, if such things apply to them.
When applying for an Asset, you must use the template found in this section. The Velvet Underground is the place where to post your application; if you have never created a thread there, you are allowed to create one. This thread will be valid for all your Squads. You must preface every new reply with the following:
Then, you may just describe what you want to buy. Assets, with their prices, are as follows:
You are free to describe and customize all of those Assets however you wish, within the boundaries of what's in the Description coloumn on the right.

[attr="class","rules_focus"]On Buried Light you have total freedom to introduce extra characters as the plot demands them: recurring villains, plot-relevant characters, sideshows. You only have to apply for these characters if you want them to be mainstay allies of your characters, in which case they are referred to as Squadmates.

Please use common sense, when introducing NPCs in this way, to keep them consistent with the lore of the site.

[attr="class","rules_focus"]On Buried Light, you don't need to be a lone wolf. Teaming up with other players, letting your characters form deep bonds of friendship and camaraderie, is really more than half the fun.

- Squad Name: The Squad's name. If the Squad is affiliated with any Faction, it's possible to take inspiration from the Faction itself to get a name that fits the context. To read more about Factions, click here.
- Leadership, Members: A list of all the Characters and Squadmates who are in charge of making decisions in the Squad. Remember to list them together with a link to their UPDATED App.
- Motivation: The reason why this Squad exists at all, and the goals that this squad wants to achieve. Why do these characters stick together? Necessity, friendship, camaraderie, shared interests, duty?
- Red Orbs: The total amount of Red Orbs available to the Squad.
- Assets: A list of Assets that the Squad has; Assets are explained below.

Then, you may just describe what you want to buy. Assets, with their prices, are as follows:
Asset | Orbs Cost | Description |
---|---|---|
Manpower | 400 | The Squad recruits 10 more members, of any Race. These don't count as Squadmates, and are about as strong as a beginner Devil Hunter. The Leader of the Squad must be at least Rank C to buy this Asset. |
Warehouse | 1200 | The Squad acquires or builds a warehouse. It can house almost anything in large quantities, but it must be dedicated to storing something specific: weapons, vehicles, chemicals, consumable goods, and so on. It can be located anywhere: a container storage in an industrial area, a barn in the middle of nowhere, a secret stash in the city. The cost includes any manpower needed to run the warehouse. |
Production Facility | 2400 | The Squad acquires or builds a place where to produce something. Within reason, it's possible to produce anything, but each Facility must be dedicated to something in particular: consumables, ammo, chemicals, vehicles, and so on. It can be located anywhere and it can appear under all sorts of forms: it could be a science lab, a garage, a factory, a chemical plant, etc. The cost includes any manpower needed to run the facility. |
HQ | 5000 | The Squad acquires or builds headquarters. This is a piece of land, a building, or otherwise an area designated to be "living quarters" for the entire Squad; it can be at most as big as a residential complex. The cost includes any manpower needed to run the headquarters. |
You are free to describe and customize all of those Assets however you wish, within the boundaries of what's in the Description coloumn on the right.
[attr="class","rules_title"]Bases
[attr="class","rules_focus"]Bases are not fully developed as of Buried Light's Public Alpha release. When they are ready, they will substitute the Squad Assets system.
