On Buried Light, character progression is measured with a currency named Red Orbs . Red Orbs can be obtained by role-playing on the site, at a rate of 80 per post. This rate can be boosted in several ways, outlined here.
Red Orbs double as a measure of character progression as well as a currency. In fact, the Rank of a character increases when enough Red Orbs have been accumulated, regardless of how many have been spent. Each new Rank unlocks more upgrades and gameplay aspects for the Character. The ranks, with their thresholds, are as follows:
Every new character begins play with 1000 .
Red Orbs can be spent to buy any and all upgrades to a character, be it Equipment or combat-related upgrades.
Buying upgrades using Red Orbs usually confers a secondary currency as a form of "cashback": Blue Orbs . Blue Orbs can be used to buy Equipment and Techniques (see below) together with Red Orbs, but purchasing upgrades using any amount of Blue Orbs cannot generate further cashback of Blue Orbs or other currencies.
Traits are, as the name suggests, passive features of a character that set them apart from their peers. Traits provide exclusively physical benefits, and can be present from the Character's birth or be acquired through training; their source can be magical or physical.
There are some standard Traits you can pick from a list, but it's always possible to make your own custom Traits (some Traits may be fixed by your character's Race) and it's always possible to write your own Trait description to add flavour and customise your character more. Combat Foci (singular: Combat Focus) encapsulate the fighting style(s) of a Character. This is a Devil May Cry Roleplay after all, so most characters will have at least one Focus and will be capable of fighting. Foci, like characters, have Ranks. There's no limit to how many Foci a Character can have, however the Rank of a Focus can never exceed the Rank of the Character.
In other words, a Focus encapsulates a fighting style for a Character. Foci can be bought using Red Orbs only.
On the other hand, by "Techniques" we mean the individual moves that a character may be able to perform. Techniques can be bought with both kinds of Orbs.
Most importantly, Foci can have Aspects. An Aspect is a special effect that pertains to a certain Focus and allows the Character to create more powerful and more diverse Techniques.

Equipment on Buried Light comes in two flavours: Crafted Arms and Devil Arms. Despite what the name says, Arms actually encompass all kinds of equipment: not just weapons, but also tools and armor fall under the "Arms" umbrella. Arms (and their upgrades) can be bought with Red Orbs or Blue Orbs .
Crafted Arms are all those Arms that have been created either using technology known to Humans or through magical means, or a mix of both. Great examples of weapons that fall in this category are Dante's Ebony&Ivory or Nero's Red Queen.
It's possible to upgrade Crafted Arms by buying Upgrade Points, which can be spent to tack on upgrades to the Arm. Nero's Devil Breakers are examples of Crafted Arms fitted with some Upgrade Points.

Devil Arms, on the other hand, aren't created through "normal" means. Devil Arms are the solidified fighting spirit of a demon and act like catalysts for demonic power; because of this, each Devil Arm is unique in name, appearance and function.
Moreover, many Devil Arms can lay in a "dormant" state until enough demonic power (or rather, Orbs) are infused into them to awaken them. This dormant state generally looks so mundane and different from the awakened form to warrant a separate name.
Sparda (with its dormant state, Force Edge), Alastor, Gilgamesh and Nevan are all perfect examples of Devil Arms.
Because they are in some sense still "living", they have Ranks just like Characters. As Orbs are poured into them, they gain more and more Ranks; to represent a Devil Arm's unique playstyle, they also provide a Character with their own Combat Focus.
