Earth is double. There are two realms, on Earth: the Human World, the only reality known to Humans ever since they evolved higher brain functions; the Demon World, a chaotic realm brimming with magic and shrouded in darkness. For millions of years, either side found no hard evidence that the other existed.
The two worlds are separated by the Veil, a primordial magical barrier that prevents passage to and from each world.
Several thousands of years ago, a demon named Mundus took complete control over the Demon World. An extraordinary feat, which he could only achieve thanks to his unimaginable strength and power. Together with his right hand man, the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda, and his underlings Asmodeus and Beel, he subjugated every single corner of the Demon World. In his lust for power, Mundus sought to extend his dominion over the "otherworld", the Human World.
Thus, he used a large portion of his immense demonic power to create a Tear in the Veil; from that point on, the Veil has been thinning gradually and irreversibly. Mundus and his armies marched over the Human World, bringing destruction and chaos. It was then, that humans came to know about the existence of the Demon World, which they named Hell, and its denizens the demons. The demons would go on to influence the myths and beliefs of the humans for the next millennia.
When Sparda came into contact with the Human World, he was struck by its beauty; he exchanged his culture with the humans, and he realised that the humans did nothing to deserve being subjugated. Instead, he wished for the humans to continue to protect their world and preserve its beauty, because - in his words - they "possessed something that demons lack".
Sparda eventually rebelled against Mundus. He pushed his armies back through the Tear, and when he couldn't hold them back anymore, he sealed the Tear with his demonic power. In doing so, he sealed himself away from the Human World never to return again.
The tale of Sparda's good deed has been passed down from human to human through generations, shaping myths and tales. The demons that still lingered after this event would go on to influence human mythology for millennia.
Sparda's sacrifice only delayed the inevitable: the Veil would tear once more, this time in several places on Earth simultaneously.
The first Tearing of the Veil happened in Florence, in Italy, in 2023; the nefarious effects of the Tearing put the governments of the world on high alert. A small group of people well versed in dealing with demons, the Protectorate, was sent to investigate.
A few years later, new Tears would open in Hamada (Japan), Sibiu (Romania) and Nassau (Bahamas). The separation between Human World and Demon World had become essentially meaningless, as demons started crossing the Tears and more humans ended up in the Demon World.
This event we refer to as "the demon invasion".
We're in the 2020s now. Humanity has yet to become accustomed to the idea of demons and magic being real. Many people still treat as conspiracy theorists those who firmly believe they've had contacts with demons, or who claim to possess hard evidence for the existence of magic. Less than one person out of a million has had contacts with demons throughout their life, but their numbers grow every day. Needless to say, humanity still has to go a long way before it can even start to comprehend the truth of the world they live in.
Despite what most people believe, the threat of the demon invasion is very real. Together with benevolent demons, like Sparda used to be, more powerful and decidedly more ambitious demons routinely cross the Tear and come to the human world. Because of this threat, several organisations and factions that specialise in dealing with the demon invasion have been born; these people, collectively, are called Devil Hunters.
[attr="class","rules_focus"]Welcome to Buried Light. Read this post here if you want to learn about the original, finely crafted history of this world!
You don't have to become an expert historian if you want to play. However, a general idea of what has led to the current state of the world will help you integrate your roleplay seamlessly.
You'll find that the lore doesn't match exactly the Devil May Cry series; however, it takes a hefty amount of material from it and follows it closely. We've done our best to recreate the setting of DMC together with a much more vivid, extensive, consistent and multi-faceted lore.
Stay tuned, as the lore will be expanded with Site Events in the future!
