Demons and half-bloods, who are deeply connected to the magic of the Demon World, can release the demonic power within their soul in an explosive fashion: this ability is called Devil Trigger. When a character is Devil Triggered, their soul unleashes an explosion of demonic power and, in some cases, even damages their surroundings. After this initial release, the character enters a more powerful state.
The physical appearance of Demons and Half-bloods during Devil Trigger typically differs from their "base form", but the difference could be as subtle as a demonic aura surrounding them all the way to a completely transformed body with altered proportions.
Humans don't usually possess an innate affinity for demonic power, however they can also access a state similar to Devil Trigger. For humans, the same ability is called Overdrive.
While Devil Trigger is rather standard in its appearance and function, Overdrive is much more varied in the effects that it can have. First of all, it is not necessary for a human to release their power explosively; secondly, their appearance need not change although an Overdrive is often paired with some visual indication of the demonic channeling.
Broadly speaking, Overdrives can fall into two categories: the ones that empower the human, and the ones that affect a human's environment. The first kind is much more similar to a Devil Trigger in that it often equates to a direct upgrade to the human's strength or speed, or sometimes it may also bestow some additional effects on their pre-existing abilities. For this reason, it's colloquially referred to as "Trigger Overdrive".
The second kind is the manifestation of the human's soul expanding far and wide into the environment. This is sometimes also called "Inner World Overdrive", and it is one of the few abilities capable of altering the rules of the world around the user. When the human Inner World Overdrives, everybody around the user is brought inside an altered reality that bends to the human's will. The environment inside an user's "Inner World" often complements their abilities and puts them at an extreme advantage, but it doesn't strictly enhance any skill or add anything new.
Activating and maintaining an Overdrive or a Devil Trigger is very costly in terms of stamina. Going into Overdrive or pulling the Devil Trigger is extremely taxing on the body, and it's rare to find people who can sustain it for prolonged amounts of time. Some have learned to weave the activation of their Trigger or Drive into their very fighting style; this is an unlockable mechanic for characters at Rank A (see below).
Devil Triggers and Overdrives work similarly on a technical level. In particular, they are both similar to how Crafted Arms work with their Upgrade Point system. In fact, it's the same system, except there's the possibility to tack on additional points "for free".
To be specific, you can use your Red Orbs or Blue Orbs to buy Upgrade Points to spend on your DT/OD. With these Upgrade Points, you can buy Upgrades. These Upgrades come in two flavours: Trait-like and Aspect-like.
Trait-like Upgrades give the character additional Traits; they behave exactly like all the other Traits on the character, with the difference that they only take effect for as long as the Devil Trigger or the Overdrive is maintained. Traits can only provide purely physical advantages, even if the source is magical. They cost 1 Upgrade Point. Moreover, they stack on top of pre-existing Traits of the same kind.
Aspect-like Upgrades give some extra quality that is in all respects equal to an Aspect; this means that the transformation provides the character with extra Aspects from which Techniques may be developed. Aspects offer much more freedom than Traits, as they can offer all kinds of advantages and generate all kinds of effects. They cost 2 Upgrade Points.
Other than with Orbs, you can "buy" additional Upgrade Points by tacking Negative Traits onto a Devil Trigger or Overdrive. These Negative Traits represent a weakness, a disadvantage or a drawback to using the ability.
Negative Traits can be effective during or after the transformation. For example, your character may gain a massive increase in physical strength during their Devil Trigger, at the cost of massively reducing their speed; maybe their muscles are pushed so far, the character becomes immobilised and needs to rest for a few minutes after pulling the Trigger. Lingering weaknesses are considered separate from weaknesses during the transformation.
For every Negative Trait added this way, you may increase the Upgrade Point count by 1.
Devil Triggers and Overdrives are different from the additional forms one can buy and use through the Shape-shifting special ruling: in the case of Shape-shifting, the character loses all of their original Traits and Aspects as long as they are transformed; with DTs/ODs these qualities aren't lost and can be used in conjunction with all other qualities.
Constructs have access to Overdrives or Devil Triggers on a case by case basis. A robot, for example, would be able to Overdrive; in principle, however, a robot without any soul-related powers shouldn't even be capable of Inner World Overdriving because there would be no soul to expand. On the flip side, a homunculus made of demon body parts could very well draw upon their biology to pull a Devil Trigger. The world of Constructs is varied and unpredictable, but what matters is your common sense and the specific way you want to play your character.
When applying for a DT/OD or for any upgrade to an existing one, you must use the template found in this section. The Divinity Statue is the place where to post your application; if you have never created a thread there, you are allowed to create one. This thread will be valid for all your Characters.

Expert users of their Devil Trigger or Overdrive forms have learned to weave such a form in the middle of a flurry of attacks, blending transformation with attacks. Briefly unleashing one's demonic energy just as the attack is about to land may increase the damage many times over, on top of adding special effects that come with the transformation.
Since the transformation is so short and usually lasts only for the time of impact, this has little stamina drain compared to a full blown, sustained transformation.
At Rank A, characters may choose one of their Devil Triggers or Overdrives as their "Distorted" DT/OD, and they permanently gain all of the Traits and Aspects of that form. The Traits apply to the Character (including the Negative ones) while the Aspects become integrated with the Combat Focus associated to the DT/OD permanently; Traits of a similar nature will stack together.
At the end of the day Distorting a DT/OD is a choice with tradeoffs, and not all characters may find it suitable for their fighting style or simmply just their taste.
To choose a DT/OD as the "Distorted" one, simply apply to the Divinity Statue for the same exact DT/OD but with this Trait-like Upgrade at the end of it:

The ones that are meant to apply during the transformation, such as slowness or weakening, are instead perpetually applied to the character. Choose your Distorted DT/OD wisely.
- Techniques that don't use Aspect-like Upgrades of the Distorted DT/OD can still benefit from the character's new Traits without needing to be re-applied for or upgraded.
